If you're following our campaign, you probably noticed that we went quickly from 6% of our funds raised, to 68%. You might be wondering why, and since this documentary makes the filmmaking process as transparent as possibly, I want to make sure you know why.
On Friday, we lowered our goal from $60,000 to $10,000.
This was not a decision that we made lightly. A number of factors played into that decision, but the most important was a very exciting opportunity for this production.
Without giving too much information, there's a chance for this documentary to receive even more exposure and funding if we re-launch the campaign in May 2016 so we can finish this film. Since our goal is true social change, we simply couldn't pass up the opportunity to raise more awareness about this topic that we're so passionate about.
Oh my gosh, you're going to bug us for money again in May?! You may be thinking. I totally get it.
As crazy as it sounds, especially since this is fundraising, it's not about the money. It's about growing our our community. When we come back in May, one of the most important things that will determine whether or not we're successful is our community and followers.
We need to spend the time between now and May growing the DTATB community and raising more awareness about our efforts to #ShatterTheStigma. When I say 'our', I mean you and us.
This is a film for you and funded by you, so this is very much your community and your film. Every one of you is a part of making this documentary.
When you share our posts, you're helping this film be made. When you tell people about the documentary, you're helping to grow our community. And when you talk about why you want to see a film like this, you're truly living the dream of this project, and that's to start new conversations.
We lowered our goal to $10,000 because that's what we need to finish production. Many people don't have a background in filmmaking, so they don't realize how insanely expensive it can be to make a movie. Even low budget documentaries come in with a price tag of $500,000.
If we pull this off for under $100K, which is what we plan to do, we'll be operating on a micro budget, and we'll be pulling off some serious indie filmmaking magic. The only reason we'll be able to do that is so many industry professionals share our passion for breaking the stigma around infertility and pregnancy loss, and are working at reduced rates.
Once we reach our new goal, we're going to spend the Spring finishing production, and re-launch in May to raise the funds for post-production.
So why was our original goal so high? The $60,000 goal was to finish production and go through post. Most people split those up, and we miscalculated when we combined them. Our plan is to spend the money we raise with this campaign by finishing the incredible interviews we have planned and holding a couple more public filming events.
We're going to ask for your help several more times before this documentary is done. In truth, we'll ask for it long after, as well, because the work of shattering the stigma is ongoing, and is more than just watching a film once.
